To make a financial donation to ACES you can use the link below or you can send a check made payable to Ashland Christian Emergency Services. Note: ACES is a 501(c)(3) organization, and all donations are tax deductible. Please refer to the **“Needs List”** (updated monthly) located at the bottom of this page. ACES accepts gently used and new clothing for adults and children including casual clothing, business attire, shoes, boots, jackets, coats, loungewear, sleepwear and undergarments. We prefer new or like-new undergarments, we prefer to receive seasonally appropriate clothing donations because we do not have abundant storage space. We accept non-perishable food donations as well as laundry and household cleaners, toiletries, diapers, and feminine hygiene products. We accept fresh fruit and vegetables as long as they do not require immediate refrigeration. We only accept perishable (refrigerated or frozen) goods when there is a clearly traceable path from source to service (example: a date and time stamped store receipt) so we can assure the items are safe for our client’s consumption. We accept both baby food and pet food. We accept gently used and new bed and bath linens, household goods and small appliances (can openers, pots, pans, dishes, cooking utensils, tableware, cups and glasses, toaster ovens, crockpots, hotplates, electric skillets, microwaves, fans, heaters, lamps, etc.), baby care items (strollers, high chairs, etc.), and medical equipment (walkers, canes, bath chairs, etc.). We accept donations when we are open (Monday and Wednesday between 8:30 and 11:30). If you are unable to bring your donation during our operating hours, please call 804-798-2784 to request an appointment. Although we do not accept donations of furniture and large household appliances (refrigerators, washer, dryers, etc.) we do keep a running list of clients that are searching for these items. If you have something that you want to donate, please do not hesitate to contact us so we can link you to clients in need. Volunteers take on all roles at ACES. We accept donated goods during our open hours (8:30 – 11:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays) and sometimes on other occasions when arranged in advance. We sort donated items based on condition, cleanliness, and appropriateness to meet our current needs. When we are not able to utilize donated goods, we pass them to Goodwill. We staff both the adult and the children’s clothing areas to assist clients with their clothing needs. We staff the food pantry to sort and stock donated goods and to fill food orders for our clients. We sort donated household items and keep our warehouse stocked and orderly. We staff our database and registration table and assist new clients in filling out registration forms and updating forms as needed. At each visit we check client’s credentials (ID and address verification), confirm their eligibility for the service(s) they request and enter their visit into our database for future reference. We remotely staff our senior rides program (additional information below) and our financial assistance program. In addition to the day-to-day activities of the volunteers, we also have volunteer board members that are voted on each year during our annual meeting. The board positions include President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, two Members at Large, and a Senior Rides Director. If you are interested in volunteering with ACES, please complete and submit a volunteer application (link below).: Hanover Senior Rides needs drivers to help seniors and disabled persons who can no longer drive. This service gives seniors the mobility they need to live independently. Our volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to take seniors to medical appointments, to grocery shopping and for personal business. Drivers are paid 50 cents per mile to reimburse for the cost of gas. The Hanover Senior Rides program in central Hanover County is operated by Ashland Christian Emergency Services (ACES). We provide food and clothing as well as limited household essentials and limited financial support to those in need within our community. ACES is located at 507b Caroline Street in the Town of Ashland. We are in the long metal building across Route 1 from the Food Lion and across Caroline Street from the Urgent Care. Our door is half-way back on the side of the building. Please check the website calendar for our days and hours of operation. The team of volunteers I lead, serve and address the unmet needs of the less fortunate in the Ashland and central Hanover County community. I thank you for your kindness and appreciation for the efforts of our volunteers. In 1969, Frank Darling (Duncan Memorial Methodist church) and the Ashland Area Clergy Association saw a need for a charitable organization to offer help to persons in need – whether Ashland residents or persons temporarily in the Ashland area. As a result of identifying this need, they formed Ashland Christian Emergency Services (ACES) to provide food, clothing, household furnishings, fuel, and overnight shelter in cases of emergency. Mr. Darling obtained permission for the use of the vacant Ashland Depot (RF&P) building for the initial ACES headquarters. In 1978 the first ACES constitution was formalized. In 1984 ACES moved from the railroad Depot to 603 England Street. In 1987 ACES by-laws and articles of incorporation were approved. In 1987 ACES moved to and rented the middle space (507b) in the metal building at 507 Caroline Street. In 1988 ACES board approved the purchase (dependent on fundraising) of the 507 Caroline Street building. This approval occurred in part due to a $10,000 pledge by Duncan Memorial Methodist church. In 1990 ACES finalized the mortgage for the 507 Caroline Street building. In 1992 due to the generosity of “Friends of Hanover”, and gifts from area churches, civic clubs and individuals, ACES was able to retire one of its two mortgages on the 507 Caroline Street building. In 1995 due to continued fundraising efforts and donations, ACES was able to retire the second mortgage on the 507 Caroline Street building. ACES occupied the middle section (507b) and rented out the front and rear of the building (507a and 507c). In 2010 after the tenant that occupied the rear unit (507c) gave up their tenancy, ACES renovated the space to create a dedicated “children’s clothing” area. In 2014 In coordination with Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions (MCEF), ACES expanded its services to include “Senior Rides” a ride share program for seniors. In 2015 with the help of Hanover Habitat for Humanity, ACES went through an interior renovation (507b Caroline St. building) to improve accessibility, safety and functionality of the space. **Current:** For 55+ years ACES has provided for the needs of the less fortunate in our community through the generosity of a dedicated staff of unpaid volunteers and through the generosity and kindness of the greater community. The Ashland Ministerial Association sponsored an ecumenical program held at the Duncan Memorial United Methodist church early in 1964. This program included Bible study classes by Reverend Terry Riester of the Ashland Christian church, a course in Roman Catholicism by Father John Murphy, St. Ann’s Roman Catholic church and a study of social issues by Reverend Ed Wright of the Duncan Memorial Methodist church. From this work came the expressed need for lay people to furnish help for families who often lost everything in home fires. The local ministers felt that they were overburdened with other responsibilities and felt the church lay people could help the churches and themselves in this service. In 1969, Mr. Frank Darling, Duncan Memorial Methodist church, obtained permission to use the vacant Ashland Depot (RF&P) without charge. Mr. Darling then moved to Alabama to head a new pharmaceutical program at Auburn University before anything else could be organized. Donald Cumfer, Ashland Presbyterian church, was then elected Chairman of the newly named Ashland Christian Emergency Services, ACES. Wincy Cumfer, St. Ann’s Roman Catholic church, was named as the coordinator in charge of collecting, sorting, and giving out clothing, food and used furniture to burned-out families. Mr. Lewis Bryant and a crew he assembled put some sturdy clothing shelves up in the depot building along the railroad tracks. Mr. Bryant supplied the frequent use of his business truck and obtained the assistance of Mr. Jimmy Jones in picking up furniture, food, and clothing and making deliveries of heavy items. ACES’s scope was soon expanded to others in the community needing assistance. Mrs. Jake (Rosalie) Spears, Independent Christian church, who had for years been doing similar work on her own, joined with ACES and reached out to many more in need. Representatives from almost every church body in Ashland participated in various ways including attending the first formal meeting of the group in the Cumfer home at which time Don was elected Chairman and Mrs. Lavona Glave, Duncan Memorial Methodist church, was elected Secretary/Treasurer. Later, Mrs. Margaret Leek, Ashland Christian church, was elected and served a long time as Treasurer. The rent-free Ashland depot was very helpful but ACES had to pay the electric bill (building was not heated). Several different Sunday school classes agreed to pay the bills from time to time. Various churches held “ACES Sunday” and the offerings that were taken up were donated to ACES. Not only money, but food, clothing and furniture was included in these offerings. Jim Pugh, Ashland Presbyterian church, was one of the chief furniture movers as a number of refrigerators, stoves, freezers and almost all other types of furniture were donated and given out to needy people by ACES. It would be impossible to name all the people who assisted ACES in the early years. However, Lavona Glave, Margaret Leake, Trixie Acey, Ruth Herrell, and Shirley Wise helped in the formation of the group, getting it off to a good start, and many of these people helped out with clothes sorting, mending, sizing, shelving and giving the goods out to the needy. As the needs arose, ACES helped transients with gas and food, and sometimes a motel room. Many trips were made to Hanover Court House Health Clinic, Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and other places. The Hanover Sheriff’s Department often called asking assistance in emergency care for transients passing through the area and out of money and luck. Many requests for food and other assistance, such as electric bills, fuel bills, wood for heating, etc. were referred to us by Hanover County Social Services. On many occasions ACES and the various county groups worked closely together, each providing something that the other could not. Over the years, many from the local community reach out in support of ACES. For example, for many years Kiddie Kingdom collected food and new toys for ACES to provide to the destitute at Christmas time. The Presbyterian church started an annual “Mitten Tree” and collected children’s warm clothing items for Christmas distribution. There were wood ministries that provided firewood to those in need. Local merchants occasionally donated surplus clothing items left over from sales. As more and more people and businesses became aware of the good that ACES was doing in the community the more they became involved. All the services that ACES was able to provide required the commitment and aid from a lot of Ashland citizens. In appreciation for the early work done, a Bradley (Bradford) Pear tree was planted by the Depot in October 1984 in honor of all those that had a hand in the establishment of ACES. ACES has since moved its operations out of the Depot and into its current location, a metal building at 507b Caroline Street. We also provide clothing to those who reside within the Western Hanover Emergency Action Team “WHEAT” (wheathelp.org) service area of western Hanover County (zip codes 23015, 23047, 23146, and 23192). The eastern portion of Hanover County (zip codes 23111 and 23116) is served (same services as ACES) by Mechanicsville Churches Emergency Functions “MCEF” (4mcef.com).** If you reside within our service area, you can use this form to register for our services (food, clothing, limited household items and limited financial support). Fill out all sections of this form in pencil and sign the back in ink, then bring the form to ACES along with your photo ID and proof of residency (a piece of official mail that is no more than 60 days old and includes both your name and current address). If you are coming to ACES for the first time to receive clothing or food, you are encouraged to fill out the registration form at our facility when you arrive. You will also be required to complete an ROI form. Everyone that receives services from ACES must sign and date an ROI (Release of Information/Information Sharing Agreement) Form so that we can enter your information into our database. If you are coming to ACES for the first time to receive clothing or food, you are encouraged to sign the ROI form at our facility when you arrive. Although it is not required, if you are seeking assistance with food, you will be encouraged to complete a food pantry form. The food pantry form seeks to clarify any food allergies or special requirements that you or your family might have. It also gives you the opportunity to decline foods that you or your family do not like or would not use. Food orders are filled first come first served based on what we have in the pantry at the time of your visit. The Senior Rides program was established to help seniors age 60 and older and disabled persons who can no longer drive and need transportation in order to stay in their homes. If you live within the Ashland, central Hanover County area (zip codes 23005, and a portion of 23059 and 23069) you may qualify for this program. The ACES Senior Rides Packet is linked below. ACES can provide food to those within our service area as often as **every 30 days**. We primarily offer canned and dry goods, but on occasion we have refrigerated items such as cheese, hot dogs, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables. We also provide basic toiletries when we have them available. ACES can provide casual adult and/or children’s clothing to those within our service area as often as **every 60 days**. Children’s clothing includes newborn, infant and toddler sizes as well as little kids sizes 4 – 6X and big kid sizes 7 – 18. We also have a limited selection of shoes, dress clothes, sleepwear, underclothes (including diapers) and outerwear for adults and children. ACES can provide essential household items (bed linens, bath linens, cooking and table ware and utensils, to those within our service area as often as every **6 months** if we have them in stock. Occasionally we have small appliance (fans, heaters, toasters, toaster ovens, electric skillets, crock pots, etc.) available. The Senior Rides program is a nonprofit volunteer driver program coordinated by ACES and MCEF that provides transportation to seniors (60+) or persons with disabilities who are no longer able to drive and cannot obtain other forms of transportation. The program’s goal is to assist seniors to stay in their homes as long as possible. Riders must be ambulatory (able to walk independently or with use of a cane or walker). Rides may be arranged for scheduled medical appointments, grocery shopping, and personal business such as banking. Registration is required before using this service. On a case by case basis, ACES may provide financial assistance in emergency situations (such as an eviction notice received for housing or a disconnect notice received for utilities). In order to be considered for financial assistance, you must register as a client (see link to forms above) and you must provide all pertinent documentation of your financial need. You may either bring your documents (photo ID and eviction notice, disconnect notice or other financial hardship documentation) to ACES during our regular business hours or you can send all relevant documentation directly to the ACES treasurer at [treasurer@aceshanover.org](mailto:treasurer@aceshanover.org). Please be advised, ACES will financially assist a family/household or individual no more than **once in a three-year period**. ACES does not provide financial assistance with day to day lodging, security deposits, or mortgage payments. There are many churches and charitable organizations that provide food to those in need in Hanover County. Refer to the food pantry list to see what days and times the pantries in your area are open The mission of the Hanover Health Department is to improve the health of our community by preventing disease, promoting healthy lifestyles, and protecting people from environmental and other hazards. Their vision is healthy people in healthy communities. Hanover Safe Place(HSP) is a non-profit organization that has been providing confidential services to persons who experience domestic or sexual violence in Hanover County, VA and the Town of Ashland since the early 1990s. Included in these services are a free and confidential 24-hour crisis hot line, emergency shelter, support groups and case management. Their mission: to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault, provide services for victims, and create community awareness around these issues Hanover Interfaith Free Clinics is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation staffed entirely by professional and administrative volunteers. The clinics provide free health care to registered, uninsured, low-income residents of Hanover County, Virginia, who have qualified for care. They are ministry-based and are generously supported by donations and grants. They are located in Ashland and Mechanicsville and are open in the evenings. Their mission is: “To offer a faith-based healing ministry to our qualified Hanover neighbors by providing free medical and dental health care with compassion, dignity and respect.” Virginia WIC Program WIC stands for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. The Program provides nutrition education, breastfeeding promotion and support, supplemental nutritious foods, counseling at WIC clinics, and screening and referrals to other health, welfare, and social services. The goal of the program is to improve the health of pregnant women, infants and children (under 5 years) through better nutrition and access to health care. To be eligible for the WIC Program, applicants must meet categorical, residential, income, and nutrition risk requirements. WHEAT was formed in the early 80’s by a group of people from some of the churches in the Beaverdam area. It has been growing since then. They have approximately 15 churches with several members from each to keep the organization going strong with God’s help. WHEAT serves approximately 200+ families each year. WHEAT’s mission is to assist neighbors in need in Western Hanover County by providing emotional, spiritual and physical support so that God’s children can thrive, succeed and love others. MCEF is a group of churches working together to help their neighbors in need since 1976. Their mission is to help residents of Mechanicsville, VA to handle financial emergencies, prevent homelessness, improve their quality of life, promote health and wellness and to maintain their independence. Moments of Hope (MoHope) Outreach operates a resource center in the city of Richmond. MoHope provides emergency shelter to its unsheltered neighbors, operates a food pantry, and hosts a weekly community outreach luncheon, rain or shine, with a mobile pantry, health screenings, bike shop, clothing ministry, fellowship and prayer. MoHope began as a one-man homeless outreach in late 2014, began serving Saturday lunches in late 2015, became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2016, launched an emergency shelter program in 2017, and opened a food pantry in January 2019. MoHope serves Caroline, Hanover, Henrico and King William counties, and the City of Richmond, VA. Senior Connections, the Capital Area Agency on Aging (also known as The Span Center) is a private nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1973 with the mission of empowering seniors to "live with dignity and choice”. They assist seniors in finding the resources that they need. Circles Ashland has a community-based approach to dealing with poverty. They believe that responsibility for both poverty and prosperity rests not only in the hands of individuals, but also with societies, institutions, organizations and communities. They also believe that Ashland and Hanover County have an abundance of people, resources, and hope sufficient to make real change through reciprocal relationships in the community – all that is missing are strong bridges between these parts. They build these bridges by nurturing intentional friendships, providing education opportunities, and advocating for change. Their approach is a progressive model grounded in research that shows families must have strong social capital and connections (relationships and resources) with their communities in order to improve their economic situation and overall quality of life in their neighborhoods. Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity: In 1990, a group of Hanover citizens wanted to provide safe and affordable housing in Hanover County. In order to accomplish this, they started a local affiliate under Habitat for Humanity International. Known as Hanover Habitat for Humanity, for over 30 years, they have been building homes alongside families who pay an affordable mortgage. Habitat’s Critical Repair Program began in 2017 and addresses critical repairs around the home to keep homeowners safe and dry. In 2021, Hanover Habitat for Humanity expanded to serve the residents of King William County and changed its name to “Hanover and King William Habitat for Humanity”. With the help of Habitat for Humanity and the help of the community, Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability, and independence they need to build a better life for themselves and their families. We celebrated the birthdays of our Executive Director, Al Dickerson, who turned 90, and Gloria Brown, a longtime volunteer. Wonderful time together; great fellowship. Our president for the past 17 years, Al Dickerson, was honored at our meeting and given a special gift. Al will continue to be involved with ACES in the role of Executive Director. Denton and Laura Baker and Jacque Hoskin hard at work renovating our food pantry. The renovation allows for the storage of more food and better accessibility. Thanks guys! Dave Goodwin, a volunteer at ACES, won the Spirit of Dedication award for 2014.
